Forged Performance - Sebring Redline Time Attack Race Report

Friday, August 27th, 2010 by Tray

Hi everyone, we are back in town and all caught up from a very successful weekend at Sebring. Redline Time Attack finished off their east coast swing with a stop at the historic Sebring International Raceway, which is one of my favorite tracks. As expected in central Florida ambient temps approached 100F, and 70%+ humidity coupled with 125F track surface temps made for a very tough day for competitors. Based on previous experiences at the track, the general consensus was the track was 3-4 seconds slower than a “typical” day at Sebring while many competitors were unable to complete even one flying lap due to the temps, and the amount of wide open throttle usef on this very long 3.7 mile 17 turn circuit.

On Saturday, my objective was to get comfortable with the completely new wheel and tire package we’re running in Modified Class. We switched to 18 inch R888’s in size 305/35/18 up front and 335/30/18 out back mounted on those beautiful HRE C90’s 18X10.5 and 18X12 wheels. With Alex, our crew chief, and Bryan Hise from JRZ waiting in the hot pits, I made 2 complete laps around the circuit and brought the tires up to full competition temp. Sebring’s bumpy surface, and liberal use of concrete tends to make the GT-R push on corner entry. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case even with the wider tire out back. Only in the slowest of right turns, did I feel a bit of understeer, followed by neutral/slight oversteer bias from apex to track out. Although I could live with that, I knew we had to dial most of the understeer out to set the fastest laps around this course. So I dove into the hot pits and we made tire pressure changes up front, and one click softer in the front to help gain some compliance on turn in. The adjustments helped a lot, and were inspiring a lot of confidence. Throughout the day, we got faster and faster, and ended up setting the fastest practice time overall with a 2:18.7. Back in January, I went even faster, with worn out R888’s so it gives you a reference point as to how bad the track conditions were. By the end of Sat, things were looking really good for the Forged Performance GT-R, as well as the two other GT-R’s that pitted with us. Catseby Jones, who’s GT-R we prepared for the 2010 One Lap of America race was right behind me, followed by Will Taylor (GoTurnStop/Underpressure). The rest of the field stacked up behind us.

Sunday was the big day, where the real competition starts and ends. Two of my biggest competitors, Ryan Gates EvoX, and Turn In Concepts Subaru Imprezza Sti where having major issues with their cars, and we were unsure if they would make the race. Ryan Gates ended up calling it a day, as his car would not cooperate this time, while the guys at TIC completely rebuilt their engine the night before using the concrete paddock is their work space…ouch! We pushed as hard as we could throughout the day, and ending up finishing in 2nd place with a time of 2.17.9. I was very surprised we didn’t beat the TIC car, as I had previously bested him a few weeks back at VIR. This was when I noticed he was running full racing slicks in the class which we all know are prohibited. He was 1.5 seconds faster than me on those tires. The official word from RTA, is that the Continental/Hoosier Grand Am GS Spec racing slick was issued a waiver to compete in the modified class as they feel that the Conti/Hoosier Slick is a slower tire than the NT-01/R888. Although I disagree strongly with this assessment, it’s not my series, and I don’t make the rules or make the waivers. I hold nothing against the guys at TIC, as they were allowed to run the tire, so they did just that. Ok, enough of my crying about the tires. I know we have a faster car on comparable tires, and that’s good enough for me.

I wanted to thank all of our sponsors, especially Nissan Motorsports, JRZ (Bryan Hise), HRE Wheels, Cobb Tuning, AMS Performance, and the entire crew at Forged Performance. You won’t meet a more dedicated and passionate group of individuals in this business, and it’s always a pleasure partnering with you all. These guys keep our GT-R running as flawlessly as it runs today and are always available to share technology and R&D. And I wanted to recognize all our friends, clients, and fans for coming out and watching and supporting us through the long hot weekend. You guys are great!

As a side note, I also entered the Forged Performance Porsche 996 GT3 in the Super Modified RWD class, and finished in 2nd place with a 2:24, and just a few hundredths of a second away from first! Not bad for a mostly stock car, and stock drivetrain.

Thanks, and we look forward to seeing you all on track in the near future!

Forged Performance Teams up with HRE Wheels for Ultimate Track Car Challenge

Thursday, June 24th, 2010 by Tray

That is right!

Forged Performance is working with HRE on a special sized 18inch wheel for competition and track use. We will be debuting them at the Pirelli Ultimate Track Car Challenge hosted by Grassroots Motorsports Magazine. We are proud to be associated with HRE, as they share many of the same corporate values as Forged Performance: Super-high quality, high level of customer support and service, and honesty in their business dealings. They get the job done, and they make things right.

With the help of HRE they were able to precisely measure vehicle tolerances to tailor fitments that meet our specific needs while taking special consideration for the brake clearance, suspension and tires. We will be using their Competition line for our GT-R. The wheel that suited us best was the Comp 90. This 3 piece Forged wheel is made with Titanium fasteners and aerospace grade 6061-T6 forged aluminum. Why use a 3 piece wheel? The wheels offer high strength & durability, fitment flexibility options, and replacement of parts if needed. Super high quality 3 piece wheels have been used in professional Motorsports circles for decades.

On our Forged Performance GT-R the sizes we decided to go with are 18×10.5 Front, 18×12 Rear with the proper offsets. This will allow us to run our wheels without any spacers. With this specific wheel package it allows us to run a much more aggressive tire sizing for competition usage without protruding from the fenders in an unsafe manner. Each set will be custom tailored for our clients intended usage, tire size, and desired finish, with a leadtime of just 3-4 weeks. As an authorized HRE Dealer we are proud to represent them at the UTCC event. We are looking forward to the stiff competition that lies ahead at Virginia International Raceway.

Keep an eye out for the Forged Performance Rocking the HRE C90’s July 23 at VIR!

Forged Performance Prepared GT-R Takes Second Place at One Lap of America race!

Monday, May 10th, 2010 by sharif

Catesby's Forged Performance Prepared GT-R
Catesby Jones, driver and owner of the Forged Performance prepared GT-R takes home a second place trophy at the annual 2010 Motor Trend One Lap of America race. This 8 day grueling event is a legendary test of both man and machine. The teams are required to compete on just one set of tires, and must drive to each of the designated tracks all over the eastern half of the USA. No tow rigs or support vehicles allowed. Catesby’s GT-R left our facility with just 1100 miles on the odometer, and it now has 6300 miles on the clock!

The car is now back at Forged Performance headquarters for a thorough inspection and once-over. Next year, Catseby has big plans for his GT-R and will gunning for the number one spot!

Forged Performance continues to lead in many facets of professional and amatuer motorsports and many of the strategies and techniques we employ on race vehicles are also utilized in our street builds.

vp__21971Sharif and the rest of the Forged crew are heading to historic Road Atlanta to race in the NASA Regional Time Trials. The team’s goal is to challenge for the overall TTU class track record of 1:27. It’s very rare to see ANY cars at Road Atlanta dip into the low 30’s let alone the high 20 second range, so this promises to be a very exciting weekend for the entire team and all of our fans and customers. Look for our 48 foot rig in the main paddock area, just behind the hospitality chalet.

News: Forged Performance Time Attack Series

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 by Tray

News: Forged Performance Time Attack Series

Time Attack:AKA Time Trial. A motorsport event intended to allow competitors to run the single fastest lap they are capable of. Typical Time Attack events have at least a few practice sessions and 5 lap competitive sessions. Those five laps consist of an out-lap to enable the competitor to cross the Start/Finish line at speed, followed by 3 flying timed laps, and then a cool down lap. This allows the driver to focus on doing whatever it takes to turn the single best lap time, without having to build a race car capable of running an endurance race, or worrying about tire or fuel usage.

Many of you have seen Forged Performance’s Time Attack cars competing at the national level over the past few years. So we’ve decided to make Time Attack more accessible at the local level and available at smaller regional tracks.

We are announcing the Forged Performance Time Attack Series starting with two events for 2010.

Round 1: May 15th -16th at Talledega Grand Prix
Round 2: Aug 28th -29th Roebling Road Raceway

Pricing Structure:

AMB Transponder rental is required to record timed sessions, unless you have your own.

Transponder Rental Fee: $40

Track: 40+ treadwear tires and current registration, serious track day enthusiast on race rubber in a street car.

Sporty: 180+ treadwear tires, current registration, FULL Interior, no Forced-Induction CHANGES (no FI on non-FI cars, no turbo/blower upgrades on factory FI cars), light bolt-ons.

*At the discretion of Forged Performance certain “Super-Cars” will not be eligible for Sporty. This will apply to cars that have “Super-Car” levels of performance from the factory, such as modern Ferraris, Porsches, Lamborghinis, Z06 Vette’s, GT-R’s, etc.

Forged Performance GT-R Shatters Carolina Motorsports Park Track Record

Thursday, February 25th, 2010 by Tray

Forged Performance GT-RForged Performance Nissan GT-R continues is to shatter another long standing track record at Carolina Motorsports Park.

Forged had a really great weekend at Carolina Motorsports Park, in spite of the 6-8 inches of snow that fell on Friday night which made for a VERY exciting haul from Atlanta to Kershaw, SC. We arrived to the track on Saturday morning, to the sight of a half foot of snow over the entire track. Surprisingly by noon, the snow melted and the track completely dried out.
By the end of the weekend, we set the fastest lap recorded at a NASA Time Trial event at CMP, with a hot lap of 1:36.8 http://www.mylaps.com/results/showrun.jsp?id=1404823
This bested the previous record for over 3 full seconds previously held by a 996 TT back in 2008. Thought I would share the results, and include a quick video of one of the faster laps. The track was a handful to say the least and very green after all the snow. Grip was lacking, and the track was very inconsistent through the day.

Setup:
Stock turbos
About 525whp (Dyno Dynamics)
JRZ Triples
Hoosier A6’s (295/315)
Aeromotions R2.Two Active Wing

The Nissan GTR was Piloted by Sharif Abdelbaset.

Enjoy the Video!!!

The results are in!

The Forged Performance Motorsports Team is pleased to report another podium finish at last weekends Redline Time Attack Event, at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. Driver/GM Sharif Abdelbaset was able to close out the season in the Forged Performance GT-R with a 3rd place finish timed at 1:44.9, edging out Russ Warr in the LIC Motorsports Subaru who captured fourth place about 1 second behind. Competition out west was far greater than anything they had seen thus far , but were able to finish 2/10 seconds behind Mike Cronin Jr. in the Fontana Nissan GT-R. Once again the Forged Performance GT-R performed flawlessly and encountered no problems. What’s even more remarkable is this was Sharif’s first time laying eyes on Autoclub Speedway and the very intimidating Turn 1 and Turn 2 banked oval section where he saw speeds exceeding 170mph.

The car ran beautifully all weekend long with a Forged Spec Cobb AccessPORT calibration. The Willall transmission cooler and fluids, along with the JRZ triple coilovers allowed us to push harder than ever. The addition of the Aeromotions R2 Active rear wing helped shave nearly a second off Saturday’s practice times which were run without active aero. All of the fast track GT-Rs are running this type of wing, and it’s proven incredibly effective.

The team would like to thank our sponsors for 2009: JRZ Suspension, Toyo Tires, HKS,Willall Racing, Volk Racing, AP Racing, Cobb Tuning, CBRD, Aeromotions, and NAGTROC.ORG

Willall Racing Titanium Catback Exhaust - Now Taking Orders!

Thursday, November 5th, 2009 by ryan

WR35EX GTR TITANIUM CAT BACK EXHAUST SYSTEM

Willall Racing is in the final stages of their testing of their new Titanium Catback Exhaust for the GT-R. This exhaust looks to be an incredible bargain as it will be priced at the very reasonable price of $2780 plus shipping! We expect these to be available in about 10 days.

Details:

Crafted from Titanium and carefully welded for the perfect finish our WR35EX Titanium Cat Back exhaust system (pictured here with WR35MP midpipe assembly) is a superb lightweight racing piece for your GTR. Saving some 20kg or 40lb from the weight of your GTR there is power to be had not only through the superb big bore 90mm pipe design but also the low restriction muffler assemblies and stunning looking burnt finish Titanium exhaust tips. Power gains depend on tune and other exhaust configuration but expect over 20hp with the engine management calibrated to match, but most of all the deep and supercar tone exhaust note will bring your GTR to life.

WR35MP GTR PERFORMANCE MID-PIPE

In addition to the release of their new Titanium Cat Back Exhausst system, Willall Racing has released a new Titanium Midpipe to be paired with their exhaust. This Midpipe appears to also be an incredible bargain and will be sold for $900 plus shipping.

Details:

WR35MP Willall Racing Mid-Pipes replace the stock heavy centre resonator and pipe section on the R35 GTR which make it sound muted and quiet, most unlike a performance car. Crafted from Super Light and tough Titanium our Mid-Pipes have the utmost craftsmanship and engineering put into their production. Each WR35MP is tested for fitment on a GTR before shipping so you can have a perfectly aligned production piece anywhere in the world.

Long section flex pipes are used to ensure the interface between the engine and exhaust is not stressed or broken even in severe motorsport applications. Pipe sizes are generous with 78mm at the front and 90mm discharge to ensure optimum gas glow. Gains are significant over stock, with the actual horsepower number dependant on the tune in place. An important bonus is the weight saving from installing WR35MP. Not only is there less exhaust back pressure for more flow and performance, but there is also a 75% (24lb or 13kg approx.) reduction in overall weight.

We are now taking orders for both the Titanium Cat Back Exhaust and the new Ti Midpipe. Please PM or call me for any questions regarding these products!

The Forged Performance Motorsports Team is pleased to report another podium finish at last weekends Redline Time Attack Event, at Carolina Motorsport Park. This is their 6th consecutive Podium finish with the Redline Time Attack series. Driver/GM Sharif Abdelbaset was able to hustle the GT-R to a 2nd place finish with a time of 1:40.9, edging out James Elterman in the Takata STi. who captured third place about 2 second behind.  As always competition was tight, but we were able to finish strong behind Ryan Gates in the AMS Evo X. Once again the Forged Performance GT-R performed flawlessly and encountered no problems.

“The car ran marvelously all weekend long”, said Sharif Abdelbaset. “We used Friday to dial in our suspension and air pressures with the 95F ambient temps, so we were ready to go for competition”, he continued. “The Willall transmission cooler and fluids, along with motorsport JRZ triple coilovers allowed to push harder than ever”, said Sharif. Gates, Abdelbaset, and Elterman have been pulling ahead of the rest of the Modified class competitors, as the season heats up, with just two more scheduled events to go for the Forged Performance Motorsports Team.

Look for the team at the next Redline Time Attack in Englishtown Raceway, New Jersey on August 29th-30th. Forged Performance GT-R in Modified Magazine!

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009 by ryan

We have been eagerly awaiting the August issue of Modified Magazine to hit newsstands. Our GT-R graced the cover along with the other 2 podium winners of the Modified Magazine Tuner Shootout which was held back in March. We were very happy with our final placement of 3rd place just behind the GST and Full Race Subaru’s. This year consisted of 11 very stout cars from some of the best tuning shops in the country. Needless to say competition was tough! We felt that our moderately modified GT-R was very competitive with some of the insanely built cars that turned out to this years shootout. You can read more details in the August issue of Modified Magazine!

Forged Recaps Competition at Modified Magazine Tuner Shootout

UMS Tuning with the dyno power test

UMS Tuning with the dyno power test

Where do I begin!? We just returned from the Modified Magazine Tuner Shootout in Phoenix, AZ. This was truly a once in a lifetime experience for me. It’s not often, that we get the opportunity to compete against 12 of the top tuners in the country, across all of the major motorsports disciplines: Dyno, Autocross, 1/4 mile, and Time Attack.

Let me start by saying, that we’ve been asked to maintain an information blackout until the article is published. You will find a 10 page article in the August issue of Modified Magazine, which hits the stands in July. That said, lets get started with a quick recap, and my reflections on this terrific event.

Like most of the products they carry for the GT-R, they have been thoroughly track tested on their in-house GT-R, and have shown great improvements over OEM fluid offerings.

Willall Racing products will also be available through a select group of dealers as well., including Injected Performance. Forged Performance is currently establishing a national dealer network, so they invite all qualified shops to contact them about dealership opportunities.
