Forged Performance - Sebring Redline Time Attack Race Report

Friday, August 27th, 2010 by Tray

Hi everyone, we are back in town and all caught up from a very successful weekend at Sebring. Redline Time Attack finished off their east coast swing with a stop at the historic Sebring International Raceway, which is one of my favorite tracks. As expected in central Florida ambient temps approached 100F, and 70%+ humidity coupled with 125F track surface temps made for a very tough day for competitors. Based on previous experiences at the track, the general consensus was the track was 3-4 seconds slower than a “typical” day at Sebring while many competitors were unable to complete even one flying lap due to the temps, and the amount of wide open throttle usef on this very long 3.7 mile 17 turn circuit.

On Saturday, my objective was to get comfortable with the completely new wheel and tire package we’re running in Modified Class. We switched to 18 inch R888’s in size 305/35/18 up front and 335/30/18 out back mounted on those beautiful HRE C90’s 18X10.5 and 18X12 wheels. With Alex, our crew chief, and Bryan Hise from JRZ waiting in the hot pits, I made 2 complete laps around the circuit and brought the tires up to full competition temp. Sebring’s bumpy surface, and liberal use of concrete tends to make the GT-R push on corner entry. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case even with the wider tire out back. Only in the slowest of right turns, did I feel a bit of understeer, followed by neutral/slight oversteer bias from apex to track out. Although I could live with that, I knew we had to dial most of the understeer out to set the fastest laps around this course. So I dove into the hot pits and we made tire pressure changes up front, and one click softer in the front to help gain some compliance on turn in. The adjustments helped a lot, and were inspiring a lot of confidence. Throughout the day, we got faster and faster, and ended up setting the fastest practice time overall with a 2:18.7. Back in January, I went even faster, with worn out R888’s so it gives you a reference point as to how bad the track conditions were. By the end of Sat, things were looking really good for the Forged Performance GT-R, as well as the two other GT-R’s that pitted with us. Catseby Jones, who’s GT-R we prepared for the 2010 One Lap of America race was right behind me, followed by Will Taylor (GoTurnStop/Underpressure). The rest of the field stacked up behind us.

Sunday was the big day, where the real competition starts and ends. Two of my biggest competitors, Ryan Gates EvoX, and Turn In Concepts Subaru Imprezza Sti where having major issues with their cars, and we were unsure if they would make the race. Ryan Gates ended up calling it a day, as his car would not cooperate this time, while the guys at TIC completely rebuilt their engine the night before using the concrete paddock is their work space…ouch! We pushed as hard as we could throughout the day, and ending up finishing in 2nd place with a time of 2.17.9. I was very surprised we didn’t beat the TIC car, as I had previously bested him a few weeks back at VIR. This was when I noticed he was running full racing slicks in the class which we all know are prohibited. He was 1.5 seconds faster than me on those tires. The official word from RTA, is that the Continental/Hoosier Grand Am GS Spec racing slick was issued a waiver to compete in the modified class as they feel that the Conti/Hoosier Slick is a slower tire than the NT-01/R888. Although I disagree strongly with this assessment, it’s not my series, and I don’t make the rules or make the waivers. I hold nothing against the guys at TIC, as they were allowed to run the tire, so they did just that. Ok, enough of my crying about the tires. I know we have a faster car on comparable tires, and that’s good enough for me.

I wanted to thank all of our sponsors, especially Nissan Motorsports, JRZ (Bryan Hise), HRE Wheels, Cobb Tuning, AMS Performance, and the entire crew at Forged Performance. You won’t meet a more dedicated and passionate group of individuals in this business, and it’s always a pleasure partnering with you all. These guys keep our GT-R running as flawlessly as it runs today and are always available to share technology and R&D. And I wanted to recognize all our friends, clients, and fans for coming out and watching and supporting us through the long hot weekend. You guys are great!

As a side note, I also entered the Forged Performance Porsche 996 GT3 in the Super Modified RWD class, and finished in 2nd place with a 2:24, and just a few hundredths of a second away from first! Not bad for a mostly stock car, and stock drivetrain.

Thanks, and we look forward to seeing you all on track in the near future!

Forged Performance - NASA Results are in! 2 - 1st place Finishes at Road Atlanta

Thursday, June 24th, 2010 by Tray

This past weekend we had the pleasure to compete in a Nasa Time Trial at one of the nations most popular tracks. There was a lot of stiff competition. In the TTU class there were fully race prepped Viper ACR’s, Race Corvettes, and of plenty of Porsche’s.. The near 100F temps and 50% humidity took it’s toll on the competitors but we manage to best out the competition with a 1:30 lap time 2 days in a row with our Forged Prepped GT-R.

We are working on a new look for the car, so bear with us. I wanted to thank our generous sponsors for their support:

Forged Performance Teams up with HRE Wheels for Ultimate Track Car Challenge

Thursday, June 24th, 2010 by Tray

That is right!

Forged Performance is working with HRE on a special sized 18inch wheel for competition and track use. We will be debuting them at the Pirelli Ultimate Track Car Challenge hosted by Grassroots Motorsports Magazine. We are proud to be associated with HRE, as they share many of the same corporate values as Forged Performance: Super-high quality, high level of customer support and service, and honesty in their business dealings. They get the job done, and they make things right.

With the help of HRE they were able to precisely measure vehicle tolerances to tailor fitments that meet our specific needs while taking special consideration for the brake clearance, suspension and tires. We will be using their Competition line for our GT-R. The wheel that suited us best was the Comp 90. This 3 piece Forged wheel is made with Titanium fasteners and aerospace grade 6061-T6 forged aluminum. Why use a 3 piece wheel? The wheels offer high strength & durability, fitment flexibility options, and replacement of parts if needed. Super high quality 3 piece wheels have been used in professional Motorsports circles for decades.

On our Forged Performance GT-R the sizes we decided to go with are 18×10.5 Front, 18×12 Rear with the proper offsets. This will allow us to run our wheels without any spacers. With this specific wheel package it allows us to run a much more aggressive tire sizing for competition usage without protruding from the fenders in an unsafe manner. Each set will be custom tailored for our clients intended usage, tire size, and desired finish, with a leadtime of just 3-4 weeks. As an authorized HRE Dealer we are proud to represent them at the UTCC event. We are looking forward to the stiff competition that lies ahead at Virginia International Raceway.

Keep an eye out for the Forged Performance Rocking the HRE C90’s July 23 at VIR!

News: Forged Performance Time Attack Series

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 by Tray

News: Forged Performance Time Attack Series

Time Attack:AKA Time Trial. A motorsport event intended to allow competitors to run the single fastest lap they are capable of. Typical Time Attack events have at least a few practice sessions and 5 lap competitive sessions. Those five laps consist of an out-lap to enable the competitor to cross the Start/Finish line at speed, followed by 3 flying timed laps, and then a cool down lap. This allows the driver to focus on doing whatever it takes to turn the single best lap time, without having to build a race car capable of running an endurance race, or worrying about tire or fuel usage.

Many of you have seen Forged Performance’s Time Attack cars competing at the national level over the past few years. So we’ve decided to make Time Attack more accessible at the local level and available at smaller regional tracks.

We are announcing the Forged Performance Time Attack Series starting with two events for 2010.

Round 1: May 15th -16th at Talledega Grand Prix
Round 2: Aug 28th -29th Roebling Road Raceway

Attendees will have the option of open track (no timing) either or both days, and transponders will be available for both open track and Time Attack sessions.

Pricing Structure:

$255 Saturday and Sunday combined

AMB Transponder rental is required to record timed sessions, unless you have your own.

Transponder Rental Fee: $40

Forged Performance GT-R Shatters Carolina Motorsports Park Track Record

Thursday, February 25th, 2010 by Tray

Forged Performance GT-RForged Performance Nissan GT-R continues is to shatter another long standing track record at Carolina Motorsports Park.

Forged had a really great weekend at Carolina Motorsports Park, in spite of the 6-8 inches of snow that fell on Friday night which made for a VERY exciting haul from Atlanta to Kershaw, SC. We arrived to the track on Saturday morning, to the sight of a half foot of snow over the entire track. Surprisingly by noon, the snow melted and the track completely dried out.
By the end of the weekend, we set the fastest lap recorded at a NASA Time Trial event at CMP, with a hot lap of 1:36.8 http://www.mylaps.com/results/showrun.jsp?id=1404823
This bested the previous record for over 3 full seconds previously held by a 996 TT back in 2008. Thought I would share the results, and include a quick video of one of the faster laps. The track was a handful to say the least and very green after all the snow. Grip was lacking, and the track was very inconsistent through the day.

Setup:
Stock turbos
About 525whp (Dyno Dynamics)
JRZ Triples
Hoosier A6’s (295/315)
Aeromotions R2.Two Active Wing

The Nissan GTR was Piloted by Sharif Abdelbaset.

Enjoy the Video!!!
